Are Your Employees Stressed Out?

Do you currently have employees who are worried?

Have you noticed or heard about any of your employees who are stressed about the increasing prices of food, gas or rent? Did you know that these thoughts of worry can negatively affect their productivity?

In this week’s leadership video, I discuss Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a theory that discusses how certain needs must be met for people to be motivated to produce their best effort.

Why is understanding this important to leadership? Because these are the thoughts that are dominating the minds of your employees. If the lower level human needs are not met, employees will not be able to focus on anything else.

3 Tips to Support Stressed Out Employees

Tip#1 Become acquainted with Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

His theory discusses the basic, psychological, and self-fulfillment needs of human beings. The basic needs must be met, like food and water. People must also feel safe and have connection. Once they have these and a few other needs met, then they can focus fully on their work.

Tip#2 Create a work environment where those needs can be met.

At work ensure that employees feel safe and secure and try to meet their basic needs when possible. For both in-office and remote workers, ensure that they have adequate time for rest. Additionally, ensure that they are given challenging opportunities whenever they are available. Also look for ways to build community within your team.

Tip#3 Proactively support employees when possible.

Provide a listening ear for employees when they mention their needs to you. Become familiar with your company’s EAP program and ensure that employees are aware that a program exists (if your organization has one). As leaders, we should do whatever is reasonably within our power to help meet the needs of our employees.
